Volunteer Zhizi Li, with Northern Illinois University's Alpha Phi Omega chapter, helps to move mulch from the bed of a truck to a wheel barrel to be spread around the site of a future garden outside of the DeKalb County Community Services Department on Saturday, April 27, 2013. The Community Services Department partnered with the DeKalb County Community Gardens to install a half-acre garden that will feature 30 raised beds of fruits, vegetables and herbs to increase fresh produce for low-income residents and those isolated from full-service grocery stores. The garden will initially serve the Women, Infants & Children program, Veterans Assistance Commission, residents at Heritage Woods and families enrolled in Head Start. The funding to start the garden came from $1,500 in federal grants.
