• DeKalb Sheriff's Office deputy Bill Kaminski said two eyewitnesses saw a blue Chrysler minivan westbound on Suydam failed to stop at the sign and crashed into the southbound Taurus while going about 55 mph.

The impact sent the Taurus into the pole southwest of the intersection, apparently snapping it in half and leaving a spike wedged into the driver's side and pointed toward the sky.
 • Kaminski said preliminary reports show that the van's driver and passenger were an elderly man and woman, who were taken by ambulance to Valley West Hospital. The Taurus was registered to a man who was flown to Rockford. Kaminski said the crash was reported about 2:25 p.m., and the helicopter touched down about 3:10.
 • He couldn't speak to the extent of the people's injuries.

The scene was blocked off in all directions until about 3:20 p.m.
